Personal: Family on Film

As a boy, several times a year, I grew up riding through North Alabama to my grandparents house in Muscle Shoals, AL. I would look out the window as we passed through Huntsville, AL & see the NASA rocket pointed toward the sky & dream about one day flying to space. I was for sure it was in my future! And I almost had a chance when I was in fifth grade & competed in a paper airplane contest where I advanced to the finals. I ended up placing second & narrowly missed spending a week at Space Camp. Frankly, I’m still upset about not winning that trip. Moving on…

On May 10, we celebrated our oldest son’s, Brennan, birthday; he turned the big 5. For the past year when we’ve asked him what he wanted to do for his fifth birthday, he said, “I want to have my birthday at the US Space & Rocket Center.” Throughout the year we would inquire again to make sure that’s really what he had in mind & to our presumption, each time he insisted that he wanted the Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, AL. Of course I was super excited & Joy did an incredible job planning the day, inviting family/friends & making cupcakes.

When we arrived, we trekked into the Rocket Center & had a blast celebrating Brennan’s big day. I’m still kicking myself, but as Brennan was opening his presents, I forgot a battery for my film camera & only had my iPhone. However, when we arrived down at Joy’d parents house to spend a few days, I whipped out the ole Contax 645 & went through a few rolls. Here are some of my favorite pics of some of my favorite people!

Macey Holden Garkovich Bridal Session {Athens, TN}

Macey has to be one of the most kind persons you’ll ever meet. I’ve known Macey & her family since High School & they have always been very gracious to me. In early 2012, Macey introduced me to her fiance, Erik Garkovich, who, is simply a class-act. I can’t tell you how much I enjoy these two. In April ’12, I was able to photograph their engagement (click here). Last August I was privileged to venture to Amelia Island, FL to photograph Macey & Erik’s wedding (click here). And it was a weekend I’ll never forget.

A few weeks ago I was able to spend some time with Macey for her bridal session. Often, I find, many brides are eager to do a bridal session but run out of time before the wedding for it to take place. Thus, we schedule a session following the wedding, which often relieves stress on making sure the dress stays spotless. Yet, in any case, before or after, it’s always wonderful spending time with my clients & making sure we capture images they’ll love forever.

Here are a few of my favorites from Macey’s bridal session.

Natalie Clayman Interior Design {Knoxville, TN}

There is so much I love about this little girl’s room I recently photographed for Knoxville Designer, Natalie Clayman of Natalie Clayman Interior Design. Natalie was hired to transform the below room into a space worthy of any girl’s fairy tale dream. She nailed it!!! As with every room I photograph of Natalie’s, I get a glimpse into her mind, her art, her style. As a result, I walk away inspired & with a renewed imagination for what is possible in design. It’s a beautiful thing to work with people so tremendously talented in their field. Here are a few of my favorites from our shoot; I know you’ll love it too!

The Blair Family {Lifestyle Session | Chattanooga, TN}

As I was preparing this blog post, I took a minute to look back at the first time Jenn and I photographed the Blairs.  (Check out their session from nearly two years ago here.)  My, how quickly Jayden and Kerrington have grown up!  We love watching families grow through pictures; it’s an added bonus when those families are great friends.  Such is the case with Jason and Joy.  We’ve known each other since Jason and I were in school together in Memphis…a time which is getting further and further in the past I might add!  Since then, our numbers have grown a bit.  With our Addison now added to the group, we roll into restaurants looking for a table for seven.  Things have certainly changed!  Also, speaking of change, the Blairs are expecting their third; congrats guys!  It was great hanging out the other day; food, photography, and friendship…life is grand!

The Watson Family {E.G. Fisher Library, Athens, TN}

I’ve been photographing the Watson family for years now. It all began when Sara asked Todd for a family photo shoot for her birthday. And he delivered! I’ve really loved getting to know the Watsons & it’s been a blast to watch this family grow. In the past three years I’ve seen Todd change jobs, the birth of Eliza (their second daughter), the family move, sell & build a new home. Sounds like quite the adventure… see for yourself below:

A few weeks ago I was privileged to photograph this wonderful family once again. I couldn’t believe how much Eliza had grown since her newborn session. And Sofia, as always, was beaming with life. We met up at E.G. Fisher Library & ran around the incredible wetland park area. I think you’ll love these! Here are a few of my favorites:
