Tips for Mobile Photography, Part 2 // Mornings with Fox 43, WBIR

This morning I had the wonderful opportunity of appearing on Mornings with Fox 43, Powered by WBIR Channel 10 for my 2nd segment on Tips for Mobile Photography. I must tell you up front that I completely didn’t realize they had started filming & I was still trying to get my phone set up. Whoops! I hope it wasn’t too weird. In case you weren’t able to watch the segment, feel free to click the image below to watch. And I also made a graphic that gives a bit more notes & details of the content mentioned on the segment. Enjoy!

Kayce & Jared’s Legacy Springs Wedding // Madisonville, TN

As a new associate photographer, I’m proud to present my first wedding with Finch Photo! When I first met Kayce and Jared last year to shoot their engagement session, we drove up to Cherohala Skyway to get some great pictures of them and the mountains. The whole session was a great experience. Since the weather is sometimes unpredictable up there, we didn’t know what to expect. We found A LOT of fog! It definitely didn’t stop us and it actually made some great pictures. I could very much feel their love for one another in every picture; then and now. When I arrived at their wedding venue, I knew everything was going to turn out perfect. Legacy Springs offers a great location for any kind of wedding with acres of beautiful trees, fields, and water. Both Kayce and Jared’s family/friends were also welcoming and made the whole experience great. I’m thankful I could capture it! I now consider them my good friends.

Tips for Mobile Photography, Part 1 // Mornings with Fox 43, WBIR

With the recent release in Apple’s iPhone 6 & 6+, many people are asking if there is any reason to have a point & shot camera anymore. And, can camera phones really produce consistent results. Today’s segment, “Tips for Mobile Photography, Part 1″ focuses on 3 tips for better mobile photography. In part 1, I don’t get in depth as to what apps to use, filters to look for, etc. However, I concentrate on elements that will produce good photographs. Then, in Part 2, (coming soon), I’ll give an inside look into what apps I use & may even give you an opportunity to watch me edit a series of phone photos. In any case, here is the video link (click here) from this am as well as notes from today’s segment. Enjoy!

Knox’s 5th Birthday Party

My little mini-me, Knox, turned 5 several weeks ago & we had a small party with our family & a few friends. I could write for days about how proud I am of each of our children & about the joy they bring to our lives. For several months we’ve been asking Knox what kind of birthday party he would want & he kept insisting on an “Indian” party. In a major way, he is infatuated with all things Indian. He often wears a rad little Indian costume complete with moccasins & a spear that a friend made him. When he’s in costume, he couldn’t be happier. So for his birthday, Joy was busy thinking of ways to decorate & style his party. She made several headdresses for Knox & his friends in addition to having a activity area for kids to make their own necklaces & bracelets. I designed some little Indian cupcake toppers & went to Lowe’s & picked up a few wooden poles & a painter’s canvas drop cloth to make a teepee. Thankfully, Joy’s dad came a little early & put the teepee together. It looked fantastic; what a fun afternoon!

I chose to capture the birthday party on medium format film on my Hasselblad H1, developed & scanned by Film Box Lab. Here are a few of my favorites:

Meet Jon // Associate Photographer

It’s a beautiful & fortunate experience when your business grows, especially when you have the right people working alongside you. This is certainly the case for Finch Photo. I am thrilled to announce an addition to our Finch Photo team, Jon Moore, Associate Photographer. It’s possible that you’ll never meet a nicer gentleman than Jon Moore. His winsome & ever-positive personality immediately made an impact on Finch Photo clients. Rarely do you find someone so gregarious & easy to relate to. And on the photography side, he is rare blend of technical precision & inventiveness. The mix results in a beautiful outcome. And let’s face it, he can rock a bow-tie like few can. Growing up in East TN, Jon has seemingly always had a knack for all things creative. After graduating high-school, he attended Watkins College of Art & Design in Nashville, before moving back East. And for much of 2014, Jon has been Ben’s main assistant photographer & has quickly assumed the position of Associate Photographer & Photo Editor. His work is a beautiful blend of both digital & analog/film photography. And we dare you to find someone who can speak with as much camera gear knowledge as this fella… and cars, music, and pretty much anything for that matter. He’s practically a walking “Jeopardy” show. Ha.

Finch Photo is honored to have Jon as part of our team & we know you’ll love his work as much as we do. His entry wedding package is a perfect fit for many couples & his Commercial photography portfolio makes him an excellent & economical choice for businesses both large & small. Here are a few photos in the courtyard of the one & only, Jon Moore.

I, Ben, interviewed Jon to help us all get to know him better. I knew he was creative but was curious about his background in arts. He said, “Some of my best memories growing up was trying to draw everything in front of me. Who knew that I could of just done that with a camera? Before I entered the photography world in 2009, I was designing websites and logos for local bands in the East Tennessee area in and after high school. My skills eventually landed me some scholarships for Watkins College of Art Design and Film in Nashville, TN where I was going to study graphic design. Since I already had a knack for design, I changed my major to photography after the first semester and have been loving it ever since!”

What is your favorite food?
Wedding food! But other than that, it’s either shrimp po’ boys or yellow chicken curry.

Favorite Movie of All Time?
Samsara. It’s a non-narrative, documentary type film that depicts different cultures and landscapes around the world in a beautiful way.

Name 5 Songs on your Current Playlist:
Prince – Purple Rain; Hall and Oates – Private Eyes; Fleetwood Mac – Dreams; a-ha – Take On Me; Radiohead – Karma Police

Five Bucket List Items:
Build my own house, direct a feature film, explore Scandinavia in an old Land Rover, set a world record for something, deep sea fishing.

Describe your Photo Style:
For my personal work, I tend to shoot straight on, centered environmental portraits. I love meeting new people and learning about their lives which usually affects how my photos turn out! I also have a love for street photography which goes hand in hand.

Favorite Photographer:
The one photographer that keeps me coming back for more is a man named Benoit Paille. He was the real inspiration for me even before I started taking photos. His work ranges from alternative landscapes to very conceptual portrait work that keeps me interested all the time.

Dream Photoshoot Location:
An easily accessible lake with a big rooted tree, fog, moss, boulders, forest, and a mountain in the background. That has to be somewhere, right?

Where Do You See Yourself in 10 Years?
I would like to be publishing different books of my various work ranging from how-to guides to collectives of work that I’ll have built up by that time. I would also love to travel and do documentary freelance work for different companies.
