The Blair Family {Lifestyle Session | Chattanooga, TN}

As I was preparing this blog post, I took a minute to look back at the first time Jenn and I photographed the Blairs.  (Check out their session from nearly two years ago here.)  My, how quickly Jayden and Kerrington have grown up!  We love watching families grow through pictures; it’s an added bonus when those families are great friends.  Such is the case with Jason and Joy.  We’ve known each other since Jason and I were in school together in Memphis…a time which is getting further and further in the past I might add!  Since then, our numbers have grown a bit.  With our Addison now added to the group, we roll into restaurants looking for a table for seven.  Things have certainly changed!  Also, speaking of change, the Blairs are expecting their third; congrats guys!  It was great hanging out the other day; food, photography, and friendship…life is grand!

Mikelle Danner {Newborn Session | South Pittsburgh, TN}

With the newborns that Jenn and I have been photographing lately, if we’re not careful, I believe Jenn is going to catch a serious case of newborn fever!  Actually, it might be a little late for that, and who can blame her when we get to photograph little ones as sweet as Mikelle.  Recently we ventured to South Pittsburgh, TN to photograph Mikelle when she was only a few days old.  This session was extra special because she is my second cousin (at least I think I did the family tree right on this one…gets a bit confusing after first cousins!).  When we arrived, older brother Levi (whose newborn session by Ben can be seen here) was there to help us take pictures.  You see, Mikelle had bought him a camera as a gift from her (fantastic idea by the way!), and he was there right by our side snapping away.  After a quick bottle, it was right back to sleep; what a perfect baby! After naptime, we ventured outside where Levi picked some flowers for his new baby sister; I think he scared the bees off for us as well.

As has become tradition in the past few years, there is a family reunion in the fall where all the Brocks and Danners gather and catch up.  When everyone starts to head out, we always joke with Travis and Rachel that it was great to catch up with you guys…see you in a year!  Well, I’m glad we got to see you guys more than once this year.  Mikelle is precious and you have a beautiful family.  Thanks for inviting us in to capture these precious moments!

Social Slam 2013 {Knoxville Convention Center}

Remember the good old days when you could just hang a shingle and, boom, you had a business?  Yeah, me either (and what’s a shingle by the way?), but apparently those days did exist.  However good those days might have been, they have faded into the past.  In today’s connected world, if you’re not taking advantage of social media, you’re falling behind.  However, it’s not just as simple setting up a Facebook page and voila…you’re “doing social media.”  It’s a big world out there full of tweets, hashtags, pins, blogs, status updates, and “liking.”  With so many social avenues, it can certainly be intimidating!  And once your business is social, how do you maximize its visibility?  Well, thankfully, Knoxville is host to a world class conference called Social Slam, or #soslam if you were following on Twitter that day.  Speakers came from literally around the world to share their expertise about connecting with potential clients.  I (Alan) was there to represent Finch Photo as one of the event’s sponsors to capture the day.

The day was emceed by master of ceremonies Amy Howell.  Attendees were encouraged to tweet the hashtag #soslam throughout the day with prizes from Amy going to the best tweets.  Being a Memphis native, one of her prizes was Memphis style bar-b-que sauce; too bad I was shooting instead of tweeting…that would’ve been mine no doubt!

Jason Falls got the event kicked off.  According to him, he is suffering from a serious case of Stage 3 Clout.  There is no doubt in my mind that I’m using this line in the future!

Jeff Bullas made the long drive up from Sydney Australia to be the day’s first keynote speaker.  Jeff knows a thing or two about reaching people; his blog attracts more than 4 million viewers per year!

Next up was a fireside chat discussing social media and branding.  Some big time names here; below, Rick Wion, who is the Director of Social Media for McDonald’s, goes over the delicate balance they have developed over social media with their customers

Much to the chagrin of John Morgan (below left), the fireside chat did not have an actual fire.  Maybe next time…  Below right, Xan Pearson, who is the the Chicago Bulls and Whitesox, discusses keeping the fans happy.  I’m happy to report that I refrained from asking her for Derrick Rose’s autograph!

Look who was dead center of the sponsor list; as Ben would say, “Hey-oh!”

After the morning speakers, the audience was able to choose to attend one of three breakout sessions covering various topics.  This allowed for a more interactive talk between speakers and attendees.

If only Dino Logan wasn’t so shy and reserved about social media.  Oh wait…

Perhaps the only conference in the world where having a smart phone in your hand isn’t considered rude.  In fact, it was encouraged!

Two screens are often better than one!

The SoSlam crew kept the day running smoothly.

Sponsor Bush’s Best absolutely rocked lunch!  Can never go wrong with bar-b-que!

Everywhere you looked people were connecting and networking.

Following lunch, Gabrielle Laine-Peters gave a harrowing account of how she survived literally being in the middle of 9/11.  You could literally hear a pin drop in a room filled with 500+.

Afternoon breakout sessions.

Below, SoSlam founder Mark Schaefer speaks with fellow panelists about how to maintain your personal brand.

50 ideas in 50 minutes…the highlight of the day for me.  Experts in blogging, Twitter, Pinterest, Google, and Facebook shared their inside tips.

Husband and wife team Tom and Tamsen Webster gave their first ever presentation as a team.  They rocked it!

Due to better handwriting, Tamsen was chosen to make a list of audience ideas.

Closing out the day, John Jantsch spoke about the future of digital marketing.

Leah Glenn {Newborn Session | Decherd, TN}

They say once you have two kids, having more is supposed to be easy.  Well I don’t know who “they” are, but Cory and Amanda are definitely about to test this theory out!  Jenn and I have had the pleasure of photographing this sweet family throughout the past few years.  In fact, we were able to capture their middle daughter Audrey throughout her first year (here, here, and here).  Speaking of Audrey, she has grown SO much since we saw her last; I don’t think I would’ve recognized her!  She has grown to look so much like older sister Allie.  And, if you’re scoring at home, the Glenn’s newest addition is precious baby Leah…three girls!  To say Cory is outnumbered would be quite the understatement; stay strong man!  A few weeks ago, Jenn and I traveled to the Glenn home to photograph their newest addition Leah when she was only 4 days old.  I must say how quickly I had forgotten all things newborn!  First of all, newborns are TINY; our Addison is still less than 10 months, but I have forgotten how small she once was.  Jenn, of course, immediately wanted another one…HA!  We’ll see about that…in the meantime, thanks Cory and Amanda for inviting us again to your home.  We hope you enjoy your pics and spending time with your sweet new addition!

Emma Nicholson {18 Month Lifestyle Session | Madisonville, TN}

Everyone says, “It will go by SO fast” when you have kids.  With our Addison just celebrating nine months, I can completely relate to that statement!  I would also like to add that time flies when you are photographing kids.  I cannot believe that it’s already been a year and a half since we photographed Emma as a newborn.  At the risk of sounding cliche, it seems like it was just yesterday!  We were honored to be able to chronicle her first year of life; check out these links to see how much she’s changed.

It’s been an absolute joy to watch Emma grow and capture all of her milestones.  A few weeks ago, Jenn and I spent a (COLD!) day photographing Emma at her grandparents’ house in Madisonville.  We tried to venture outside, but quickly thought better of it!  Instead, we spent the afternoon just playing.  We spent some quality time with a rocking horse and Emma’s dolls.  I love the sequence below of her giving her doll a bottle!  Also, she has the amazing ability to laugh on command…a real help to photographers!  We had a great time hanging out with you guys; hope you enjoy!
